Can Caffeine Kill You?

Here is a sobering new set of data (especially if you like java). This is from an article in the Seattle Post Intelligencer:
“Research on non-fatal heart-attack patients in Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004 found that those with a gene variant that causes them to slowly metabolize caffeine have about a third greater risk of having a heart attack when they drank two or three cups a day, and 64 percent increased odds if they had four or more cups a day, compared with those who drank less than one cup a day.”

Gratitude v. Poverty

Here is a copy of a talk I gave recently. The sound quality isn’t the best because I wanted to make the file smaller for easier download. If you would like a high quality version, let me know and I will get you one.
I am not going to blog until Monday, because I want this to be the top entry for a while. The content of the talk is probably a little different than what you are use to. Go into it with an open mind. I would love to hear thought on this. Comment link active below.

Caption Contest

The good folks in Vancouver asked me to be one of the guest judges in the “Caption Contest” being I was prominently featured in the picture. The picture can be found HERE.
* Lesson No. 1: “you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you should NEVER pick your friend’s nose”
* Gene said,”hey, when I said ‘take your pick’, I meant either a plate or a saucer…”
* Gene said, “you’re good at this… I’ll call you again during my straight jacket trick…”
* “If you break that plate, you’re dead meat!”
* Matt: Me next!
* Matt: If I only had a brain!
* Gene: Get anything?
* Okay Gene… now spin!
* I wonder if this microphone will fit up there too.
* Volunteerism at its best
* “omigosh! I’m on stage with Matt Maher AND Gene from APeX! According to the improbability generator I should…pick Gene’s nose…”
* New Method of Teaching Catechetics: “Yes, you can have the pizza on the stick, when you answer the question…!”
* “This is how you make that little white scull cap for the pope…really!”
* “Gene, you wouldn’t be able to do this, if it wasn’t for my super-powers” said the volunteer
* “OK, now that we have Matt distracted, who wants to try the next trick – picking his pocket?”
* “Gene, Jesus really came down from heaven in a spaceship? I don’t remember that in my catechism!”
* Matt pretends he is not looking – while calling the next pitch.
* And they say that her heart grew 4 sizes that day!
* It only stays on the stick as long as your finger is up my nose!
* What a “super” pick!
* “Laugh it up, Maher – you’re next!”
And my suggestions: “You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can’t wipe your friends on the desk.”

I’m Sorry

I am a die-hard libertarian, meaning I am a believer in the ability of all of to be able to make the choices we want without institutional interference. Often time’s people think that mean I am anarchist, believe we can make any choice we want with out responsibility. That is not the case. As a libertarian, I believe we can make the choices we want as long as 1) we take responsibility for the consequences of our choices and 2) we do not make a choice that infringes upon someone else’s freedom.
Sometimes when we make choices we are not simply repressing ourselves. Depending on the circumstance we are also representing our family, our school, our workplace, or our church. We can make choice that harm others.
Below is a letter that I mailed today to the head basketball coach and president of Gallaudet University in response to a choice a current CUA student made, that in some way has represented us all in a bad light. [Note: Gallaudet University is the first and only all deaf and hearing-impaired university in the world and is located in Washington, DC]
Coach DeStefano and Dr. Jordan:
It was with great interest I watched the piece on your fine school on HBO’s real sports. As a CUA alum and former athlete I was troubled by James Brown’s comments on his experience of attending a game CUA.
Please, know that the sign held up by a CU student does not represent the attitude of most students and alumni. I am very sorry that it happened. Your students deserve much better.
Below is a copy of the letter I sent to CU student news paper:
The week of March 6th HBO’s “Real Sports With Brian Gumbel” featured a story on Gallaudet athletics. I watch the story with interest. As a student at CUA I completed against them in soccer and as employ of the Sports Information Office I regularly saw them play in many more sports. I was always amazed at their ability to compete a very high level. Competing sports without the ability to verbally communicate is a great disadvantage, and they always did this with grace.
At the end of the piece, Brian was asking James Brown, who did the piece, a few questions. When he asked, “Who does Gallaudet play?” James replied, “York and CUA.” He then went on to explain at a game he went to at CUA one of the students was holding up a sign which read, “Win or loss, after the game we can still hear.”
When I heard this I was mortified and embarrassed. James did point out that a CUA official quickly removed the sign, but the damage was done. We, past and present alumi, were painted in a very bad light because of the horrible choice of one student.

Excuse me Father, I have a question

Friday and Saturday we were in Reno, NV. As part of the morning program there was a priest panel. The 450 high school students in attendance we given an hour to ask the men anything they wanted.
Before the panel started Brad and I made two predictions.
1) They are going to be asked very though questions (e.g. Why can’t women be priest? Why can’t gays marry in the church? Is divorce a sin?)
2) They have no idea these questions are coming.
Brad and I do question and answer like this most weekends with high school and jr. high students. They have very thoughtful questions and they are looking for a safe place to ask.
So Q&A began…”If you could change one about the church what would it be?” Long pause as the five men looked back and forth at each other followed by a very thought full answer (“I can only change one thing, me”)…”Why does it say thou shall not kill in the Old Testament and yet we still have holy wars?”…In the middle of question three one priest asked, “Why don’t you ask me how old I am? I prepared for that questions.”
After about 10 minutes, and a little shock, the five priest caught their stride and did a great job.
If they were paying attention these five priests had the chance to learn a very valuable lesson: The young church is very bright, they have very heavy thoughts on their mind, and they are seeking truth. BUT if we are not giving them place to explore questions about their world, they are going to look for other venues to explore those questions.

It’s all wrong

Almost everything we thought we knew as absolute truth about the world, the mind and the body 1000 years ago we now know is wrong. (e.g. a flat world)
Almost everything we thought we knew as absolute truth about the world, the mind and the body 500 years ago we now know is wrong. (e.g. the body has systems of mind, heart and stomach)
Almost everything we thought we knew as absolute truth about the world, the mind and the body 150 years ago we now know is wrong. (e.g. there was no value in a doctor washing his hands before working on the next patient)
It would be logical to believe that 500 years from now they are going to look back at our understanding of the world, mind and body, everything we hold as absolute true, as silly and uninformed.

Ordinary People, Extraordinary Gifts

Sometimes the Gospel message is so simple we just miss it.
From the AP via The Chicago Sun Time:
“PITTSBURGH — A man who started shining shoes at a hospital in 1982 set a goal of donating $100,000 in tips to the hospital’s fund for poor children.
Albert Lexie was honored Tuesday by Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for reaching that milestone.”
