Seen It All

Newest addition to the weirdest things I have seen: 250 middle-aged hypnotists doing the Electric Slide.
I spent the weekend at the National Guild of Hypnotist annual convention. Saturday was the standard recognize the leaders in our field banquet. After the last award was give, the host said, “And now we dance!”
And dance they did. Six hundred of them rushed the floor like a group of giddy high school students.
It was fun to see…
…and it made me think.
Normally, when I see a group of folks rush the dance floor, it is at a youth rally. High school dances aren’t normally that way. Prom and homecoming usually build to a dance frenzy (maybe). But at a youth rally, from word “Go” it is craziness because (I think) the students feel safe.
Back at school there is judgment and worry about fitting in, but at a youth rally everyone is the same. You can “be yourself” and just have fun.
I have a feeling hypnotist feel the same way.
They do work that is outside the main stream. Something most people know little about (and are often afraid of). They are constantly trying to prove to people what they do is safe and it has worth.
For three days a year they get together with their brethren. People, who just like themselves, have given their lives to helping others, and in doing so choose to sit outside the mainstream because helping is much more important than fitting in.
Here they have support.
They are safe.
They can “be themselves”.
Which leads to one logical outcome…
…dancing the night away.

Group Specific Kitsch

Our need to belong as part of the human condition is interesting. Not bad, just interesting
One of the ways this happens is through too cute bumper stickers like “Astronomers do it in the dark”.
Bumper stickers seen last night (at the National Guild of Hypnotism annual convention): Hypnotists are Mesmerizing.

Home Run

Here is a blog I wrote April 13th, 2004. [Note: this was pre-BALCO and pre-"Game of Shadows"]

I admit Barry Bonds is great and before he is done he will be the all time homerun leader, but let’s look at the facts.
In 1920 Babe Ruth hit 54 homeruns. A nice number, but consider the following.
In 1920 Babe Ruth hit more homes runs than every team but one (Philadelphia had 64). The next three highest homerun hitters hit fewer homeruns than Ruth combined (Sisler-SLB 19, Walker-PHA 17, and Williams-PHI 15). His 54 homeruns were 14% of the total homeruns hit in the 16 team league.
To hit 14% of the homeruns for 16 teams in 2003, one would have to hit 388 homeruns.
In addition to amazing batting numbers (714 HR, 2211 RBI, and a life time batting average of .342) he was also a pitcher. In 163 starts he had 107 complete games, 94 wins, and an ERA of 2.28.
I would like to see Mays, Aaron, Williams, or Bonds do that.

Politics

“The more you read and observe about this Politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that’s out always looks the best.”

Laughing at yourself

I am comfortable with who I am and what I struggle with, but this is a first. Everyone Kinko’s all looked over as I busted out laughing.
I just received an e-mail which started, “Dear Gene, I very much liked your blog and while I realize English is not your first language…”

More Blogs

I have resurrected an old blog http://monterastelli.com/prayer. Let me know if you have any intentions you would like me to add. The plan is to update 4 or 5 times a week.
I have created a new blog EFT Q & A. In the last week I had two articles published in the “EFT Insights Newsletter”. I received a lot of e-mail questions from fellow readers. Instead of just answering them directly, I decided to share will the larger community.
