A New Energy Source That Is Unlimited

Engineers at the University of Michigan have discovered a new way to generate energy.

A new energy-capturing knee brace can generate enough electricity from walking to operate a portable GPS locator, a cell phone, a motorized prosthetic joint or an implanted neurotransmitter, research involving the University of Michigan shows.

If you can generate that much energy by having an adult walk 2.2 miles an hour (which is not brisk at all), we could end the energy crisis if you hooked every middle school boy in the US up to one of these.

I have been without a computer for over 48 hours. It is amazing how much time I spend on it. There was lots new articles and blogs that I wanted to write over the weekend and couldn’t
God Forbid I do it long hand.
I am reduced to $0.21 a minute at Kinko’s until my computer is all better.

Lenten Sacrifice

This is a great idea!

For some, it’s chocolate. For others, it’s coffee or cigarettes. But as this Easter approaches, some young and devout Christians are anxious to return to what they gave up for Lent: Internet sites Facebook and MySpace.
Many users describe the popular social networking sites as addictive, which is why they say giving up these 21st-century temptations is a sincere sacrifice. Members on both sites create profiles and add each other as friends. They can also share messages, photos, videos and personal blogs.
“It’s been hard, especially in the beginning,” said Kerry Graham, who says she gave up Facebook for Lent.
[…]
“Some of my friends think it’s silly, since people usually give up food,” said 16-year-old Emily Montgomery, who says she’s given up her access to MySpace. “I wanted to give up something that’s really hard for me.”

Laser Engraved Toast

laser engraved toast breakfast can be magical and friendly again when you are able to burn any image you want into your toast. i’m talking about DIY laser engraved toast! nice article on how to burn the image of jesus or david hasselhoff or erik estrada onto some bread. the instructions start off with 1) find some time to kill, 2) get access to a laser etching system, and goes from there.

Ridicules Technology

I am sitting in the Manchester, NH airport on my way home.
There is free wifi in the airport so I am catching up on my blog reading, when I get an e-mail.
The note says that my flight to JFK is delayed. I go up to the gate to check on what is going on.
The gate agent didn’t know the flight was delayed. (She found out the in-bound flight is running a little late).
It is amazing how quickly information is now disseminated.

All Praise to AppleCare

I have been an Apple user for a little more than a year. I am still not convinced it is better than a PC based machine. There are some things it does better and other I would prefer a PC. But the Apple world gets major up for the last 72 hours.
My computer melted over the weekend. It was obvious that none of the data was lost, but it was still unusable (unless you were in need of a 7lb. paper weight).
10AM Monday I sit down with a tech at the Apple Store in Pittsburg. After fighting with the machine for about an hour we decided that it needs to be shipped to Houston to be fixed.
1142AM Wednesday the computer arrives at my house in Baltimore via FedEx air. And it works.
That is 49 hours and 42 minutes later. I have the computer back, working great, and it cost me nothing.
I wrote my first lines of computer code in the fall of 1983. Since then I have melted lots of computers. I have never had a service experience like this.
It is sad when we are blown away by something we should expect. None the less…I am blown away.

Right now I am…ummm…in the car!

From About.com:

Pretending to be stuck in traffic during a mobile phone call could become much easier using software that generates fake background noise.
SoundCover, developed by a Romanian phone software company called Simeda, can add artificial traffic and road works to a call at the press of a button. It can mimic a thunderstorm, the dentists drill or even a circus during a call.

What Brother Blue Look Like

I have found one of the coolest applications of economy on the internet. The web site Design Outpost is a graphic design contest site. What makes it really great is anyone can set up a competition. A possible client write a note saying what type of work that needs to be done and how much they are willing to pay for it. They then make the payment via PayPal to the web site. The contest is posted and designer for all over the country start submitting work. The person who is running the contest then provides feedback via the same bulletin board that the designers work is on. Everyone can see all the work and what he client thinks of everyone’s work. When the client is happy with one of the designs, the contest ends and the web site pays the winning designer.
To see one of these contest in action check out the contest to design the logo for Brother Blue.
